So I've been away from Youtube/blogging for a while... crazy semester, applying for Uni, relationships, work, moving, a month traveling, getting accepted into Uni, yadda yadda yadda. I'M BACK!!!
Due to the above (i.e. no time for anything at all ever), I haven't actually worn makeup beyond mascara and maybe a bit of eyebrow and blush in a loooooong time. However, I had not disappeared from the beauty world completely!
The few minutes a day I had to myself, I still searched for some inspiration, but more through the realm of art, what with being an art student and all. Occasionally, I would happen upon a beautiful photo, like this one, and feel that familiar tingle.
Ahh, the tingle. The tingle that precedes a makeup video on my channel. The tingle that reminds me how much fun colour on a face can be.
And now that I am not having mental breakdowns every other week from academic overload, I have time to indulge in that tingle! Which brings us to this video.

First I'd like to say YES I know I recently made a blog post somewhat bashin Sugarpill for their 2 year tease of their newest products. LINK HERE FOR SOME RANTING.
Nevertheless, I have an addiction that need to be fed every now and then. I aleady have some Sugarpill Chromalusts in my arsenal... Magentric, Goldilux, Tipsy, Birthday Girl and Royal Sugar. Aside from Birthday Girl being a LIIIITTLE powdery, I am in love.
Magentric, Goldilux
Royal Sugar, Tipsy, Birthday Girl. Took this so long ago, ugh...
I tend to pine after makeup for several months, sometimes over a year, before purchasing. The same can be said for my latest Sugarpill purchase.
(Amy I'm still mad at you about Sparkle Baby and Cold Chemisrty etc but you make a hell of an eyeshadow).
With flash
Natural light
Ooooh
Ahhhhh
Allow me to explain.
I recently made a post about Coastal Scents Hot Pots, which I LOVE! I found lots of in-between colours I can't seem to find anywhere else. Supercharged is this ridiculous neon orange creamsickle that I have never ever ever ever seen before, so I had to buy it. I already have tons of primary and secondary colours, so I wanted some more ambiguous colours that might perplex someone who is colour-blind (and often unable to identify tertiary colours)...
Disclaimer: I should mention I didn't order those eyeshadows specifically to confuse potentially colour-blind people, I just like blending different shades together, which is easier to do with transitional tones.
The same goes for these Sugarpill Chromalusts and the one Elektro Cute I got. As I said, I have used Chromalusts in the past. Different shades have various textured. Ex, Darling, Birthday Girl and Royal Sugar are kiiinda more on the matte/powdery side (especially Birthday girl) and the others are more like a powdered metallic very fine glittery shimmery thing. There is always a way to apply them nicely; this goes for literally any type of texture/colour/form of eyeshadow, pressed or loose, whatever.
However, things get tricky when you start playing with neon shades. Neon pigments by nature have a different texture. They tend to be a little more grainy, and clump when applied wet rather than become dispersed in water or mixing medium like most pigments. MAC crushed metallic pigments kind of have this problem too. They are also more coarse and powdery, less malliable if that makes sense, so when applied dry it's hard to get them to look un-patchy. ESPECIALLY MATTE NEON EYESHADOWS. Most companies add compounds like Boron Nitride to aid with slip and adhesion, but neon pigments are neon pigments and let's face it- they just don't want to stick to our eyelids.
This is why I am slightly confused at Sugarpill's choice of adding ultra-fine glitter to these- which want to tick even LESS to human skin.
Xsparkage (Leesha) and Vintageortacky (Cora) are among my favorite Youtubers, so here are some links to their video reviews/tutorials discussing the matter. They have some helpful tips and things to keep in mind when using these, or neon eyeshadows in general. Quite informative. :)
I swatched in different lighting so you can see how Supercharged, the Elektro Cute tends to clump up a bit when applied wet. Patted on top of a really good sticky base helps get the actual powder to stick but does not hold onto the gitter like mixing medium does. A shimmery sticky base helps with that!
Dat's all I gotta say, video tutorial to follow! Please send any requests to lizziehanley94@yahoo.ca
This article will be about the tasteless actions happening in a makeup company I personally love and support. But first...
Anyone know a company called Lime Crime? Ahh, Lime Crime...
What
started out as an exciting young artist selling pretty bright eye
shadows she "made" herself, turned into false advertisement, lying,
repackaging, poor customer service, harassment, and a shutdown of the
aforementioned product.
For a comprehensive history on Lime Crime and its founder, Xenia (Alias Doe Deere), CLICK HERE.
For a timeline of these events, CLICK HERE.
By the way, her "magic" dust has been discontinued. Funny how things work out.
In case these links disappear, I'll insert my favourite quotes and images.
That
first image speaks for itself. This second image is Lipstick and
Lightsaber's reaction to Doe's claim that she "made" her own eyeshadows
because she could not find any bright enough for her taste.
"On 4th November, Doe released this video of her calling us all big fat
liars and giant meaniebeasts for picking on her and being awful,
terrible bullies, spreading lies about her and generally damaging her
state of sparkly happy magical gleefulness, rolling in piles of cash magical fairy dust."
"Lime Criminal is their signature colour, here I swatched their "Magic"
Dust in Lime Criminal, versus three considerably brighter greens from Aromaleigh and Sleek.
In reality, "Lime Criminal" actually looks like more of a pale
goldenish sage than anything resembling a lime. Doe's also obviously
never heard of Ben Nye or Kryolan, who also make really bright, intense
make-up. (ETA: Readers have pointed out that Doe's early make-up
tutorials used Kryolan heavily. So... I guess she was just lying? Shock,
horror.)" -http://www.lipsticksandlightsabers.com/2010/01/lime-crime-beneath-glitter.html
This is why I love L&L:
"I Make All My Own Colours
(Wow, you invented your own spectrum of light?)"
This
Dough woman just set up this image for herself and marketed her
products based on her image. She had previously attempted this
transition with music and with closing design (sound familiar? She WAS
an admirer of Shrinkle...). My Personal favorite narrative about this
character is HERE. Honestly a must-read for entertainment alone.
Now,
Lime Crime is not the only company, big or small, that deserves a whack
on the hand. A couple years ago, MAC released a collection called Rodarte
which tastelessly objectified conditions for women in Juarez, Mexico.
Rather than creating a collection with bright vivid colours and names to
celebrate Mexican culture, or exposing their reality with charities
like Viva Glam, they came up with a scary promo image with a sickly,
malnourished-looking white girl, with washed-out, pale shades bearing
unacceptable names like Sleepless, Ghost Town, and Factory. Oh, yeah. FACTORY.
What the hell does this picture have to do with Mexico?
Based
in California, this exciting brand was founded by a bright, creative
woman called Amy, or "Shrinkle". With a sparkling reputation based on
her unique DIY clothing and sales of Kryolan on her ebay profile, she
had a great background to market her company. The trademark of her
products was high-impact colour, unique range. Lovely products, which I
have reviewed HERE.
While
the concept of bright colours is not unique, Sugarpill drew attention
with smart marketing, a clear foundation of high quality products, and
Youtube makeup gurus with huge audiences advertising their shadows
virtually for free. Pre-Sugarpill, as I mentioned, Shrinkle sold Kryolan
herself, but mentioned a desire to control the texture, colour and
ingredients in products. The solution was to develop her own products.
The time between the "tease" of her products and the official launch of
her company was perfect. Just enough to get the hype out there to a lot
of people without making them frustrated by inaccessability.
The release of their Heartbreaker Palette
last May was also preceded by lots of marketing, teasing and hyping up
for a while. Annoying, but tolerable. (The only thing about that palette
that was heartbreaking was how long I had to wait, repeatedly, for that
little "out of stock" button to go away.) They seem to have a problem
keeping their high-demand products in stock....
Anyone
who checks up on their site semi-regularly will know this isn't a
one-time thing. Maybe Amy bit off a little more than she can shew if she
can't keep her products in stock?
When they first
launched, Sugarpill said they would gradually release new products once
they were on their feet. And they did, withing 5 years of launching,
release false eyelashes and the Heartbreaker Palette. Kind of
skimpy in the span of 5 years, but I can't judge because I never owned
my own business. However, why stick just to eye shadow? There is a huge
opportunity for Sugarpill to branch out into eyeliners, mascaras, lip
products and cheek colours based on their strong-selling eyeshadows.
Again,
their choice, but it seems odd to me given how people literally go nuts
for their products. Releasing different products would be a no-brainer
to me. It's not like they have no other option like Lime Crime, whose
eyeshadows lost all credibility and had nothing else to sell but chalky,
overpriced lipsticks. Sugarpill would make a killing if they branched
out.
Now, here is a link to a blog post made LAST JUNE about the new products Sugarpill was supposed to be releasing
"in a few weeks". They gave people at IMATS a sneak peek of three new
collections: Elektro Cute, Cold Chemistry and Sparkle Baby.
Let
us pretend for a moment that these new collections do not contain
colours that are incredibly similar to previous-existing shades in
Sugarpill's 13- colour range. (Frostine seems similar to Mochi an Lumi, Hotsy Totsy and the new pink loose shadow looks like Dollipop, Candycrush looks like Paperdoll, the dark blue pigment looks like Royal Sugar, the lime green pigment looks like Acidberry and a bit darker than Absinthe...) WHY tease loyal customers with new
products if they are not close to ready to being sold??? Promoting is
one thing, but one year of promising these products to no avail is very
frustrating.
And now, they have released this new
Chromalust called Asteria (which is remarkably similar to the peachy
shade in the new Sparkle Baby palette), of which only 1000 were made to
be sold at PHMExpo. Is it just me, or is the vast majority of their
clientele outside of LA, and thus unable to purchase this shade?
As a commenter on Sugarpill's Facebook page said:
"You've been leaving us dangling with Cold Chemistry
and Sparklebaby for years now (it's been at least 2). Then you released
Cold Chemistry at IMATS LA and we all thought, oh well at least that'll
go up on the site soon. Nothing. WHERE IS IT?! Same with
Sparklebaby...where is it? Obviously both are ready, formulated and good
enough to sell now. I love you guys, I love when I get packages from
you, I love the little note on my invoice and the extras inside, but
THIS?! This isn't cool. Exclusives are fine for convention and I
understand the logic behind doing them, but when you do those and
NOTHING else, not fine. Please, carrot on a rope trick will stop working
very very soon".
YOUR CUSTOMERS ARE NOT HAPPY WITH YOU.
This limited
edition colour, along with their inability to keep their products in
stock or release their new products within a year of announcing it, is a
bad move. I am disappointed, given all the hype Shrinkle's eyeshadows
have attracted, and the fact that I absolutely adore the shades I have.
They shouldn't ride on the hype from their original eye products forever.
Hope they get their act together soon, because if they read their
customers' comments on their Facebook page, they would see a LOT of
frustration and disapproval.
Hey there!
Anyone realize that I like colour? In case you were unaware, I do!
Now, it can be kind of funny when you wear eye makeup that is the same hue as your eyes for a few reasons. If you have green eyes like me, green eyeshadow can really bring out the brightness of the green in your eyes. It depends on if your eyes are more on the yellow side or more on the blue side, or grey. If you want to pop the colour of your eyes, use eyeshadow that has the OPPOSITE undertone.
My eyes are more on the blue-grey side so I used bright yellow-lime greens.
If you don't have green eyes, well phooey!

Hey there...
As I mention in the tutorial, I dont really wear purple eyeshadow much anymore, because my hair is purple. I feel like purple hair, purple eyebrows and purple eyeshadow is just.... too grape-like for my personal taste.
But hey, maybe it works for you.
Anyway, I have enough purple eyeshadow to cater to an army of non purple-haired people, and I hate neglecting how preeeeeetty it looks on! To give it a little something to balance out the purple overload, i added a pop of teal to my lower lashline (I wonder if anyone guessed that there are my two favourite colours).
I'M BACK!
Soooooooo sorry about not posting in forEVER. I got caught up with mah studies and job and holidays etc and I could come up with some more excuses to bore you with buuuuuuut...
On with the tutorial. :)
I know red and pink eyeshadow frightens some, so I tried to find a way to rock the awesome brights in a not-so-intimidating way, using my usual method/placement of eyeshadows... Light on the lid, dark in the crease, blablablaaaa.
I hope this at least pushes someone to try setting a classic neutral look to colour in some way!

Hello hello!!
I have been lusting after Sugarpill's bright, fun colours since the company opened. On December 2nd, I finally placed my order for 3 pigments from Sugarpill after what seems like an eternity of anticipation. Being under-age, I bribed a friend to let me use his credit card to order the products online and payed him back. I decided to order now because of their Black Friday sale. I wonder if that's legal.
I am aware that I am possibly the last person on Earth to post about these.
So I waited and waited and waited and waited....
Yesterday, I was in a crappy mood. I felt very tired, did not feel like going to work, felt lonely and sluggish. I decided to take a walk to my mom's house for some air. I now have a bad cold, so I guess symptoms were just beginning.
When I got there, I had a funny feeling so I checked the mail. What, oh what did I find, you ask?!
This cute, little box of joy!!!!!
The owner of Sugarpill, Amy (Shrinkle), enclosed this colourfully signed receipt.
My parents will be happy to see that I cleverly photographed it so that you cannot see my address!
Upon opening this lovely surprise, I discovered adorable, pink wrapping paper and my three little bundles of colourful love in powder form (geez, you'd think I was a narc).
So adorable!
Fun wrapping of makeup
I ordered three ChromaLusts; Birthday Girl (pink), Tipsy (green), and Royal Sugar (blue). I feel like a Powerpuff Girl! Now here are way too many pictures I took out of excitement...
Sugarpill ChromaLust in "Birthday Girl"
Sugarpill ChromaLust in "Tipsy"
Sugarpill ChromaLust in "Royal Sugar"
Me playing with a different camera angle
Birthday Girl, Tipsy, Royal Sugar
This is the back of the cute little box
The only complaint I have so far is that the lids do not seem to be fully secure. There is a space between the lip of the jar and the lid, and I worry about spillage. If you look closely, you can see the gap.
Royal Sugar (each jar has the gap)
I was also sent some cute stickers and a sample of "Goldilux" Chormalust, which I have heard lots of great stuff about!
Birthday Girl:Sweet princess pink with iridescent fuchsia sparkles.
I also see gold sparkle in here, and the pink is a kind of dusty rose colour.
Tipsy:High-shimmer true grass green.
This is less pale in real life than the photos on the website. It is very vibrant and a sort of sparkle-shimmery.
Royal Sugar: Striking bright blue with a heavenly burst of turquoise diamonds. The perfect hooker blue for a sweet girl like you.
This is also darker in real life, and the turquoise shimmer in it is gorgeous! It looks like it may need a sticky base for the sparkle to really show.
I will add swatches of each beautiful shade later.
<3
Now all that's left for me to do is cover my face in colour!
